The Millage renewal supports reading interventionists in 2nd and 3rd grade classrooms across Brevard Public Schools. This is not a new tax. At Columbia, our reading interventionists, Mrs. Good and Mrs. Sutfin, work closely with students to provide targeted support that helps strengthen reading skills and build confidence in the classroom. These are critical years when students make the shift from learning to read to reading to learn. Reading interventionists provide targeted support to help students strengthen their skills and grow as confident readers. The results are showing: last school year, reading proficiency increased by 6% districtwide for third grade, and four elementary schools improved from a C to an A rating. Millage funding helps more students build the strong reading foundation they need to succeed in every subject. Strong Schools. Strong Brevard. Surtax funding strengthens school security by providing the physical security tools our campuses rely on each day. This is not a new tax.
At Columbia Elementary surtax funding supports security enhancements including secure single-point entry, upgraded locks and gates, reinforced front office safety features, expanded security camera coverage, and modern emergency alert systems.
The Sales Surtax renewal of the existing half-cent sales tax helps ensure schools can continue enhancing these protective measures and strengthening campus security to create an environment where students and staff can focus on learning and teaching

An informational flyer titled "This is what the Sales Surtax and Millage were used for at Columbia Elementary School." At the top left, the Columbia Elementary Comets circular logo appears next to the main title. Introductory Paragraph: "In Brevard, surtax dollars have funded school renovations, technology, security improvements, buses, and critical infrastructure projects, while millage dollars have supported teacher pay, student programs, classroom technology, and academic services. Together, these investments have helped keep our schools safe and competitive, benefiting students, taxpayers, businesses, and the entire community. Each funding source serves a distinct purpose, and the funds cannot be used interchangeably."
The Sales Surtax renewal is paid for by everyone who shops in Brevard and funds major improvements to our school facilities. This is not a new tax.

Sales Surtax funding allows Brevard Public Schools to complete essential projects that keep campuses safe, comfortable, and ready to serve students for years to come.

At Columbia Elementary, Sales Surtax funding made our campus-wide LED lighting upgrades possible. Upgrading to modern, energy-efficient lighting across our buildings creates brighter, clearer classrooms that improve visibility and focus for students and staff alike.

From updated air-conditioning systems and new roofs to renovated classrooms, playgrounds, tracks, and safety improvements, these investments help ensure our school buildings continue meeting the needs of students and staff.

Strong Schools. Strong Brevard.

Surtax funding strengthens school safety by providing the security tools schools rely on every day.
This is not a new tax. The Sales Surtax is a renewal of the existing half-cent sales tax that helps fund safe, maintained, and modern school facilities.
One example is the Raptor Badge Alert system. Funded by the Surtax, the system is designed to enhance student and staff safety by providing a faster emergency response when assistance is needed.
Tools like Raptor help schools communicate quickly and make it possible to respond rapidly in an emergency. When these safety systems are in place, students and staff can feel confident walking through the doors each morning.
Sales Surtax ensures Brevard Public Schools can continue investing in protective measures that help keep every school a safe and welcoming place for students to learn.

Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s),
We are writing to inform you that your child’s results from the Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) progress monitoring are now available.

FAST assessments are administered three times each school year (PM1, PM2, and PM3) and provide valuable insight into your child’s progress in Reading and Mathematics based on Florida’s B.E.S.T. Standards. These results help both families and educators track academic growth and tailor instruction to meet each student's needs.

📊 What’s Included in the Report:
-Your child’s scores from the most recent FAST progress monitoring window
-Performance level and expectations
-Progress comparison to previous assessments (if applicable)
-Highlights of strengths and areas for growth

🔍 How to Access the Results:
You can view your child’s FAST results by visiting the Florida Statewide Assessments Family Portal:
🔗PM3 Test Results

🛡️ You’ll need the secure access code provided by your child’s school. If you do not have this code, please contact us.
A printed copy was also sent home with the final report card on Friday, May 22, 2026.

🌐 Language Support:
If you need help translating your child’s FAST scores or would like to receive information in another language, we are happy to assist. Please contact Nancy Colwell at 321-676-1319, and we will ensure you receive translated materials or interpretation support.

🧭 Understanding the Scores:
-FAST assessments do not affect report card grades
-They are one part of a bigger picture that includes classwork, projects, and teacher feedback
-The results help us personalize support and instruction for your child

🏠 How You Can Help at Home:
-Talk with your child about their progress in a positive, encouraging way
-Support reading and math skills with daily practice
-Stay in touch with your child’s teacher about areas needing extra support throughout the school year

🗓️ What’s Next:
Teachers have reviewed these results to guide instruction for the next school year. If you have any questions or would like to meet to discuss your child’s performance, we welcome the opportunity to connect.

Thank you for being an essential partner in your child’s success. We wish you all a wonderful summer break!

Warm regards,
Jennifer Julian, Principal

Dear Parent/ Guardian,

This letter is to inform you that your child’s teacher may currently be employed as an out-of-field teacher at Columbia Elementary for the 2025-2026 school year.

Below is a list of out-of-field teachers and their out-of-field area of certification.

An out-of-field teacher is a teacher who is qualified to teach but has not yet met all certification requirements specified by the Florida Department of Education for the subject(s) he/she is teaching. We are required to notify parents when their students are assigned to an out-of-field teacher. Our goal is to ensure that all educational needs of the students at Columbia Elementary are met.
